How Air Conditioners Work

A few hundred years ago, kings and queens would have envied people today if they could look into the future. Air conditioning is really that much of a game-changer.
One fascinating thing about air conditioners is that they work in an analogous way to your refrigerator. That might strike some folks as odd since fridges seem to be cool all the time and your home in Emory, Texas definitely doesn’t start out cool in the summer months.

How It Works

Your air conditioning system works by converting gas to liquid and then back again in a short amount of time. The heat that starts out inside your home is ultimately transferred to the outside.
Your air conditioning’s condenser, compressor, and evaporator allow this process to take place; for that reason, Wilson’s Heating & Air install, maintain, and (if necessary) replace all of these components so that you can keep your home and workplace nice and cool.

The Compressor

In most cooling systems, your compressor and condenser are found in the outside of your system and the evaporator is housed inside the system.

These parts work together in the following way: the cooling fluid in your system finds its way to the compressor of your air conditioning system as a low-pressure gas. Guess what the compressor then does? It compresses! Your compressor compresses the gas and fluid into molecules that are more closely smushed together.

The more efficiently your compressor smushes together these gases and liquids, the more usable (pressurized) energy is in the system. The cooling fluid, therefore, would transition from the compressor to the condenser in a highly pressurized gas state.

The Condenser

This pressurized gas then goes through your air conditioning condenser, where it turns from a gas to a liquid. This changed fluid then goes to the evaporator of your air conditioning unit.

The evaporator lowers the pressure on the liquid, at which point the fluid that went through the condenser evaporates as a gas. The heat is then taken from the ambient air outside; this heat is necessary because you need your air conditioner to change the molecules from liquid to gas.

Metal Fins and Evaporator

All of those metal fins on the outside of your air conditioner help this process along by dissipating the heat this creates, not unlike the radiator in your car.

Once the refrigerant exits your evaporator it leaves as a chilled gas that’s ready to cool your home through the duct work. This entire process goes on again and again as the air returns to the compressor.

Your air conditioning’s fan and evaporator are connected, and both of these things working together allows air to continually be circulated throughout your home or workplace.

The whole cooling process continues until your home’s or workplace’s interior temperature matches the thermostat’s settings.

Call on Wilson's Heating & Gas for a Tuneup!

The above explanation actually assumes that everything in your air conditioner is already working perfectly, which isn’t always the case in the real world.

The right time to tackle any problems that you know about, and to discover potential problems before they arise, is right now since your air conditioning system is going to put through its paces.

The Checklist

A pre-season tuneup at Wilson’s Heating & Air involves ticking off a number of items on your checklist for having a perfectly tuned air conditioning.

Just like you wouldn’t want a musical instrument that was out of tune or had rusty strings on it – who would want to hear that? – you want your air conditioning to be calibrated for your entire home or business. Drafty areas in the winter and hot spots in the summer can be remedied.

One of the first things that Wilson’s Heating & Air can do for you is make sure that your air conditioning’s refrigerant level is adjusted.
Checking the level will clue in Wilson’s Heating & Air’s HVAC professionals to a possible leak somewhere downstream as well. Wilson’s Heating & Air will tell you where they find a leak and how to best fix that particular leak.

Wilson’s Heating & Air will also do the little things that make a big difference collectively when it comes to getting the highest energy efficiency and lowest monthly utility bills from your air conditioning system.

This checklist includes: checking the pressures throughout the system, tightening loose fittings wherever they’re found, lubricating bearings, cleaning coils, cleaning ducts, and cleaning condensate pans.

Thermostat

Last but certainly not least, Wilson’s Heating & Air will make sure that your thermostat is “talking” to your HVAC system and getting the temperature exactly where you want it.

Your system should, in essence, go through the above process with the condenser, compressor, and evaporator to cool your home or workplace until the desired temperature – set on your thermostat – is achieved.

If that’s not happening, then Wilson’s Heating & Air can help find out why and fix the problem.

The benefits of inspecting and fixing problems when and where they arise is that you’ll increase the efficiency and longevity of your current air conditioning system.

By improving the efficiency, you’ll save money month to month on your bills; by increasing the longevity, you’ll save a ton on money on replacing all or part of your current system.

You’ll also experience more comfort, improved air quality, and peace of mind in knowing that your air conditioning unit can go the distance in the sweltering summer months on the horizon.
